Orang Ulu’s proposal for Sape monument gets CM’s nod

MIRI: The significan­t presence and contributi­on of the Orang Ulu community here wil l be enhanced by way of a proposed ‘sape’ monument to be erected in the city centre.

Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg has given the green light for a replica of a giant sape to be erected here. He said this during a brief meeting with a delegation of Orang Ulu political and community leaders led by Senator Dato Lihan Jok here yesterday.

“Since Miri is the hub for the Orang Ulu community, we want our presence and contributi­on to be seen and felt by way of a sape replica. We are thankful and grateful that the chief minister has agreed to the proposal,” Lihan told The Borneo Post after the meeting.

Lihan said the huge concrete replica would be built in front of the Resident and District Office ( R& DO) here, which would be turned into a museum after it ( R& DO) is relocated to the Baitulmal Complex at Jalan MiriPujut.

He also proposed that a Sarawak Sape Festival be held in conjunctio­n with the launching of the monument here on Sept 1 and 2.

Among those in the delegation were deputy State Legislativ­e Assembly Speaker Dato Gerawat Gala, Baram MP Anyie Ngau, political secretarie­s to chief minister Datuk Robert Laing Anyi and Charles Balang Seling, Miri Resident Antonio Khati Galis, Temenggong Elizabeth Deng, Pemanca Philip Lakai and penghulus Mering Ibau, Ajang Wan and Freddy Abun.

Earlier, the delegates joined the over 1,000 Barisan Nasional ( BN) component party leaders and members, local dignitarie­s, community leaders, heads of department and organisati­ons in welcoming Abang Johari here.

The Orang Ulu delegates were thankful to the chief minister for spending 12 minutes to meet them despite his tight schedule.
