Consider all aspects before enforcing coupon parking at Mile 3 and Mile 7, MPP urged

KUCHING: Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) has been requested to consider drafting up better terms and conditions before implementing the parking coupon system at Mile 3 and Mile 7 to ensure that the system would not add unnecessary burden upon the shopowners, office workers and traders who need to be there the whole day.

In making this call, PKR Women national vice president Voon Shiak Ni said while she agreed that the system would help ease traffic congestion at these areas in the morning rush hours, MPP should take into account the interest the shopowners, office workers and traders there.

“We wish to call upon to MPP to consider better terms and conditions that come with the ( parking) system, to ensure that it would not compromise the convenience for the shopowners, shopkeepers, those working at officers there and also the traders.

“This is important so that it ( parking system) would not add to the cost burden of the shopkeepers, shopowners and traders at the markets in these areas,” Voon said in a press statement yesterday.

In this respect, she proposed for the setup of a system that would allow the shopowners and traders at these areas to register their car plates with MPP so that they could be exempted from paying the parking fees.

“Additionally, it is advisable for the payment service to be made available at supermarkets, and not only at parking coupon ticketing booths, which are closed in the weekends (and public holidays).”

Nevertheless, Voon said it was a good suggestion by MPP chairman Lo Khere Chiang that the parking fees be imposed only in the morning to help ease traffic congestion at these two areas.

“Elsewhere in Kuching, we notice that the parking coupon system is enforced during office hours on weekdays,” she said.
