Over 50 take part in ‘Power Up Your Mind’ workshop

-

SIBU: More than 50 people, including members of the Toastmasters Clubs, participated in the ‘ Power Up Your Mind’ workshop last Saturday at Rejang Medical Centre.

The workshop was organised by Swan City Toastmasters Club and Rejang Toastmasters Club and was conducted by renowned Toastmasters speaker Dunstan Chan.

Chan is a lawyer by profession, a columnist, an author, a trainer, a speech contest champion, a scuba diver and a very active Toastmasters member.

He spoke on the subject of critical thinking to help participants discover the unknown by using the right ‘ thoughtware’ or tools to solve a problem. That includes an explanation on the use of logic, imagination, facts, emotion, feeling and so forth.

As part of the learning process, the workshop incorporated interactive games to test the boundary of ordinary problemsolving skills. The game session enabled participants to learn, apply and understand the skills taught in the workshop.

“The interactive game sessions were very beneficial as the points were understood better,” Wong Toh Hee, one of the participants commented.

Lim Xing Hui, another participant, called the workshop “fantastic” and had learned some skills that are beneficial for her.

Meanwhile, according to the organising chairman Eddie Chung, critical thinking is important especially in public speaking because it enabled the participants to judge the information they received.

“Critical thinking enables us to filter what is real and what is not real in the world where we have information overload. By filtering what is true and what is not true, we can use it in our speech and communication as well as ( being) a leader,” he pointed out.

He said the workshop was organised by Swan City Toastmasters and Rejang Toastmasters to enable Toastmasters members in Area S1, Division S to learn new skills as part of their development programme.

Meanwhile, Toastmasters International is a nonprofit educational organisation that teaches public speaking skills through a worldwide network of meeting locations.

The organisation has its headquarters in Rancho, Santa Magarita, California and has over 345,000 membership in more than 15,900 clubs in 142 countries.

Since 1924, Toastmasters International has helped people from diverse backgrounds to become confident speakers, communicators and leaders.
