Late athlete’s mum in Taiping receives RM40,710
TAIPING: The Perak government, through the State Sport Council ( MSN), handed over an insurance compensation of RM40,710 to Chong Choi Kim, the mother of state gymnastics athlete, the late Lim Wei Yao at her house in Taman Long Jaafar here yesterday.
State Health, Public Transportation, Non- Muslim Affairs, National Integration and New Villages Committee chairman Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon said the compensation was a mark of the state government’s sympathy towards Lim Wei Yao who died while training.
“The insurance compensation can help ease the burden of the victim’s family who had lost a son,” he told reporters after a ceremony to hand over the contribution.
Lim died after he fell during tr a i n i n g at t he S ekol a h Kebangsaan King Edward VII (2) Artistic Gymnastic Hall here on May 6 last year.
As a result of the incident, Wei Yao, a student of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Darul Ridwan here, sustained an injury on the back of the neck and died at the Taiping Hospital on the same day.
Meanwhile, his mother, Chong, 45, said she was thankful to the state government for the contribution and would use it to finance her other children’s education.
She said the deceased was third among four siblings and was keen about gymnastics since the age of 12 years.
“My son liked to help the family. I accept the incident and regard it as fate,” she said.
State gymnastics coach, Jasrizal Saad said the late Wei Yao was very hardworking during training and was talented in gymnastics.
“He s tar ted undergoing gymnastics training in 2008 and had represented the state including in the Malaysian School Sport Council (MSSM) gymnastics championship in Pahang in 2014,” he said. — Bernama
