SIBU: Sibu Rural District Council ( SRDC) plans to install closedcircuit televisions ( CCTVs) this year at the proposed night market and hot spot areas in Sibu Jaya to further enhance security.

When disclosing this yesterday, SRDC chairman Councillor Sempurai Petrus Ngelai said these electronic eyes will assist the police in keeping watch over the township to keep out bad hats.

“So far, the council has not installed any CCTV in Sibu Jaya just yet. Currently, we are still communicating with Sibu Jaya Police and the Safe City Committee to identify the locations and also (address) the issue of cost and maintenance.

“The initial plan is to set up CCTVs together with the night market and at hot spot areas. We hope we can implement the plan this year to assist the police to monitor the security in Sibu Jaya more effectively,” he told The Borneo Post yesterday.

Assistant Minister for Local Government Datu Dr Penguang Manggil was reported earlier as saying 174 CCTV units had been installed in crime-prone areas across the state last year to deter crime.

Penguang said this was an initiative under the Safe City programme and funded by the Ministry of Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government.

According to the assistant minister, the CCTVs were put up in crime-prone areas or areas known as black spots.

Towards this end, he had said owners of residences especially single houses with big compounds are encouraged to put up CCTVs for their own safety and security.

Meanwhile, on a different matter, Sempurai pointed out that public waste generated would increase with every festive celebration.

“So far, I was informed that the waste (volume) is still manageable.

“The other contributing factor is maybe because of the fruit season, especially durian husks,” he noted.

He said this when asked if there was an increase in waste generation during the Chinese New Year celebration.
