Two paint shops found selling brushes made of pig bristles
JOHOR BAHRU: Two paint shops in Larkin Perdana near here were found to be selling paint brushes suspected to be made using pig bristles recently, and not only that, were using false halal logos to mislead the public.
Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry ( KPDNKK) deputy enforcement chief for Johor, Rizq Fazliana Abd Hamid said action was taken against them under the Trade Descriptions Act ( Products made from parts of pigs or dogs) 2013.
“Both shops were found committing an offence by not placing labels stating that the products were ‘ Made from pig parts’ or ‘Made from dog parts’,” she told reporters after conducting a special operation on the matter yesterday.
She added that both shops also faced action for using false Malaysian Islamic Development Department “Halal” logos.
On Monday, it was reported that the ministry would inspect all hardware stores and supermarkets across the country for such paint brushes.
In Kangar, Perlis Islamic Religious Department (JAIPs) Halal Hub and Research Division principal assistant director Mohd Al Hafiz Abdul Aziz said the department’s officers would be going from shop to shop to explain the importance of having warning labels on such brushes and separating products that can offend Muslims’ sensitivities.
Meanwhile, KPDNKK Perlis assistant enforcement chief Ahmad Sabri Mohd Suri said a special operation concerning the matter here yesterday saw 21 such brushes worth RM93.50 seized from two premises.
In Seremban, KPDNKK Negeri Sembilan deputy director Saifulbahri Abdul Kadir said its enforcement branch seized more that 500 brushes suspected to be made from pig bristles, worth about RM3,000, in a four-hour sweep on 23 hardware outlets in the state yesterday. — Bernama
