M’sia to play in Dhaka Hockey World League Round Two

KUALALUMPU­R: TheMalaysi­an Hockey Confederat­ion ( MHC) has received an offer from the Internatio­nal Hockey Federation (FIH) to play in the Hockey World League Round Two ( HWLR2) in Dhaka from March 4 to 12, instead of playing in Trinidad and Tobago.

MHC Chief executive officer K. Logan Raj said the men’s national team will be heading to Dhaka to participat­e in the HWLR2 upon consultati­on with the respective bodies which include the coaches, technical director, coaching chairman and members of the executive board.

“MHC on Monday had called for a meeting with the coaches and managers of the eight Premier league teams requesting the release of national players to join national team training in the midst of the league,” he said in the statement yesterday.

FIH drafted Malaysia, ranked 13th in the world ranking and third in Asia, alongside hosts Bangladesh (32rd) in Pool A of the HWLR2 at the Maulana Bhasani Hockey Stadium in Dhaka.

The other teams in Pool A are Oman (31st) and Fiji ( 67th) while HWLR2 FIXTURES Malaysia vs Bangladesh -- March 4 (16: 00 local time) Malaysia vs Oman -- March 5 (13:45) Malaysia vs Fiji -- March 7 ( 09:15) • Quarterfin­als on March 9, Semifinals on March 11 and Final on March 12. Pool B has China (18th), Egypt ( 20th), Sri Lanka ( 42nd) and Ghana (43rd).

The Malaysian boys who are the highest ranked team in Dhaka, come in as a replacemen­t for Canada who had recently pulled out of the competitio­n citing security concerns. — Bernama
