SIBU: United Chinese Association ( UCA) Sibu Division will attempt to break into The Malaysian Book of Records with the ‘Largest Sibu Chinese Calligraphy Event’ this Sunday at UniCity (Jalan Wawasan).

The current record for the largest Chinese calligraphy event is held by Teluk Intan, Perak with 3,067 participants.

However, to enter into the Malaysian Book of Records, the Sibu event has to exceed 3,680 participants.

UCA president Kong Hian Khim hopes to have 5,000 participants in the event.

“Now, we have almost 4,000 registered participants. Our target is to reach 5,000 participants and hopefully, we can achieve that,” he said at a press conference at Sibu Municipal Council ( SMC) yesterday.

He also said that the event was organised in conjunction with Visit Sibu Year ( VSY) 2017 and the organising team is prepared for the big event.

He advised those coming to the event to park their vehicles at the Kolej Laila Taib and University College of Technology Sarawak ( UCTS) campuses, to avoid creating too much congestion in the area.

Now, we have almost 4,000 registered participants. Our target is to reach 5,000 participants and hopefully, we can achieve that.

“We will have a shuttle bus to take people to UniCity which is not far from these two campuses,” he pointed out.

He also said on the day as part of the programme, there will be lucky draws which include 13 smartphones as well as another 300 prizes comprising t- shirts, caps, mugs, and towels to be won.

On Tuesday night, the working committee had a meeting on their preparation for the event.

Meanwhile, Sibu Resident Hii Chang Kee praised UCA for extending the Chinese calligraphy event to the nonChinese community by inviting the government sector to be part of the event.

“The Resident’s Office will issue some invitations and those interested (government sector) can register through the Resident’s Office latest by Friday (tomorrow).

“After the registration here, they will still have to register on the day itself at R1 counter and collect their stickers at the entrance before going in.

“Those stickers are for them to participate and for the lucky draws,” he pointed out.

Non-governmental bodies may register through UCA.

Hii urged more people especially the non- Chinese to participate in this historical event.

“Do not worry of not knowing how to write the (Chinese) character, this is a learning process.

“In this multi- racial society, we really encourage all races to participate,” he said.

Meanwhile, SMC chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King thanked UCA for the initiative and hoped that members of the public would be proud of the event.

So far, Sibu has three events entered into the Malaysian Book of Records.

The events are Largest Senior Citizen Gathering with 1,500 participants by the Sibu Foochow Association, Largest Coffee Drinking Event with 5,880 people and Largest and Longest ‘ Pulut Panggang’ measuring 5.5 metres in length with a 20cm diameter and weighing 160kg.

Meanwhile, participants for the calligraphy event are required to register themselves again on the day of the event between 7am– 9am.
