Cops recover stolen jewellery from pawn shop

LAWAS: Police recovered stolen jewellery from a pawn shop after arresting two suspects on Tuesday afternoon.

Lawas District police chief, DSP Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad said the two male friends, a 26-year- old local from Sundar and 33-year- old Indonesian were arrested after selling several jewellery they had stolen.

They were arrested within three hours after receiving a report from the victim, 29, from Indonesia who realised that jewellery kept in his bag pack in a room of a house at Batu 4, Trusan Road had been stolen.

The victim who works as a labourer said the jewellery worth RM5,000 were bought for his family in Indonesia.

“Swift action by personnel conducting checks on several pawn shops in Lawas town enabled the arrest of the suspects.

“Based on informatio­n gleaned from CCTV footage in one of the pawn shops, we arrested the suspects who were still in the vicinity of the premises yesterday,” he said yesterday.

Abang Zainal said police had also recovered stolen gold items including two necklaces, three rings and an ear-ring, in addition to receipts for sale of the items at the pawn shop

He said initial investigat­ion did not indicate the suspects consume illegal substance, but the Indonesian suspect was found with an expired travelling document.

Both suspects are remanded for three days since yesterday to facilitate investigat­ion of the case under Section 380 of the Penal Code.

The Indonesia suspect was also investigat­ed for offences under the Immigratio­n Act 1959/1963.
