Youths of all races encouraged to join Civil Defence Force
MIRI: Youths here including those in suburban and rural areas are encouraged to join the local Civil Defence Force (APM).
Its officer here, Lieutenant ( PA) Hazlee Mohd Shah, said recruitment was held all year round open to individuals 18 years old, and above who were physically fit and able to read and write.
“The Civil Defence here is ready to recruit and train new members so they can take part in voluntary activities and in times of emergencies,” he said when contacted yesterday.
Hazlee added that participation from Chinese youths was encouraging but they also wanted participation from other races.
“We have more than 3,000 members at present.”
He said in the first 3- 5 hours of any disaster, about 30 to 50 members could be mobilised first while attempts were made to contact the rest.
“We hope to recruit about 800 members this year and, if possible, we want more and we also expect membership from various races,” he added.
For that purpose, they were going to hold two recruitment/dialogue sessions, one each in Miri and Marudi, to familiarise youths with the force.
Applications can be made through www.civildefence.gov.my or by coming to APM Miri office.
APM Miri gives assistance during emergencies such as accident victims, destroying wasps’ nests and helping to move evacuees.
