SIBU: United Chinese Association (UCA) Sibu Division’s attempt to walk into the Malaysia Book of Records with the Largest Chinese Calligraphy Event today is a step in the right direction to put Sibu on the world map.

In stating this yesterday, Councillor Jimmy De Rozario said the event will make Sibu known worldwide.

“This is a good event to show that ‘Sibu Boleh’. It will put Sibu on the world map as this event could be made known worldwide, especially when this year is Visit Sibu Year.

“It will surely help to put Sibu in high standing (among the international community). Apart from this, as the record breaking attempt is also done alongside with University College of Technology Sarawak (UCTS), it surely will augur well for UCTS which is the first university to receive a platinum in the green index building. It helps to market UCTS,” Jimmy said.

Meanwhile, a member of the public, Robert Tan, noted Sibu is trying its best to attract tourists and also making much efforts to create attention to put itself on the world map.

On this, he credited UCA for doing the right thing to make Sibu better known to the world.

Tan, who is a former travel agent, opined Sibu needs more activities, especially this year being Sibu Tourism year.

He suggested that other than calligraphy, Sibu should think of how to expand the night market, adding that the town needed to be brightened up.

“There are at least six flights coming from Kuala Lumpur daily. Just do the right promotion and UCA is heading the right direction,” he said.

Earlier, UCA president Kong Hian Khim had said that they were confident of shattering both the Malaysia Book of Records and Guinness World Records with the support from the local populace.

He said the Malaysia Book of Records held the Largest Chinese Calligraphy Event, while in the Guinness World Record, it is for the largest calligraphy lesson.

Kong had urged the local populace to help make the event a success.

Currently, in the Malaysia Book of Records, it is the ‘Largest Chinese Calligraphy Event’ held by Teluk Intan, Perak with 3,067 participants.

To enter into the Malaysian Book of Records, Sibu needs to have over 3,680 participants.

At a recent press conference, Kong said they hoped to have 5,000 participants in the event.

In fact, shattering the Malaysia Book of Records is nothing new to Sibu, which has several events that entered the record book including Largest Senior Citizen Gathering with 1,500 participants by Foochow Association, Largest Coffee Drinking Event with 5,880 people and Largest and Longest Pulut Panggang with 5.5 metres in length with a 20cm diametre and weighing 160kg.

It will surely help to put Sibu in high standing (among the international community). Apart from this, as the record breaking attempt is also done alongside with University College of Technology Sarawak (UCTS), it surely will augur well for UCTS which is the first university to receive a platinum in the green index building.
