‘Make police report no matter how big or small the crime’

-

Members of the public who fall victims to crime activities must make police report no matter how big or small the crime is.

Lanang MP Alice Lau said this would not only prompt the police to take action but also to prevent others from become victims.

She said this to comment on a case involving a taxi driver cheated of RM100 and taxi fares by his passenger.

The taxi driver surnamed Law, 59, came to see Lau at her service centre at Aman Road here to tell of his problem yesterday.

Lau said the vict im was approached by the suspect in front of a hotel at Kampung Nyabor Road at about 9am on Sunday.

The suspect told the victim to take him to a bank at Central Road where he was told to wait inside the taxi while waiting for him (suspect) to do his business there.

“The suspect emerged from the bank and told the victim that he could not withdraw money from the bank’s ATM because he left his wallet in his hotel room.

“The suspect asked the victim to lend him RM100 with the promise to return the amount together with the taxi fares if he drove him back to the hotel to get his wallet.

“The taxi driver refused. The suspect then told him that he would not leave the taxi until the victim lent him the money,” she said.

Eventually the victim gave in and drove the suspect back to the hotel, Lau said.

When they reached the hotel, the suspect alighted from the taxi and entered the hotel’s main entrance. He then f led through the back door and disappeared.

The victim lodged a police report on Monday.

Prior to making the police report, the taxi driver related his ordeal to his colleagues who told him that they too had fallen victims to the same person using the same tactic.

“But they did not bother to lodge a police report because they thought it only involved a petty amount.

“So by making a police report, the taxi driver was doing the right thing because he did not want it to happen to others.

“This is the right mindset that we all should have. Regardless of the amount involved, we must alert the authority about the presence of criminal activities in our community,” Lau said.
