RM500 mln to reduce non-revenue water woes in six states
LABUAN: The Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water (KeTTHA) will be spending half a billion ringgit for its nonrevenue water (NRW) programme in six states beginning this year.
To run for three years, it is to resolve various NRW issues including replacement of old pipes and water meters.
Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili said the states are Sabah, Sarawak, Pahang, Perlis, Kedah and Kelantan.
“We hope the programme will be able to reduce the NRW problems experienced by the six states, and old pipes replacement in Labuan will also be included in the NRW programme,” he told a press conference after opening the RM8.17 million new building of the Labuan Water Department

He also directed the department to strictly monitor the water quality in this duty-free island.
The directive followed numerous complaints from consumers over the ‘murky water’ received from the tap.
“The issue of murky water will be investigated thoroughly, whether it is due to pipe leakages, lack of house water tank maintenance or something else,” he said.
Earlier, in his speech, he said the number of water treatment plants in Labuan had increased to five now from two plants in 1984.
“Production capacity increased 10-fold, from 11.8 million litres daily (mld) to 100 mld daily now, and the number of accounts increased to some 18, 000 compared to only 6,149 accounts in 1984,” he said.
He added that his ministry was currently conducting an engineering study on water supply infrastructure to meet the country’s demand for high quality and sufficient clean water supply until 2040. — Bernama
