Suppliers of environment–friendly plastic containers urged to reduce price

KUALA LUMPUR: Kuala Lumpur City Hall ( DBKL) urges suppliers of environment-friendly plastic containers not to charge a high price to traders to ensure the success of the plastic bag and polystyrene- free programme in the federal capital.

DBKL executive director for socio- economic development, Datuk Ibrahim Yusoff said a handful of traders claimed they had to incur higher cost following the use of the environmentfriendly product.

“Suppliers are suggested to give discounts to traders who purchase the environmentfriendly products in bulk to ease their burden and thus educate the public on the importance of the environment.

“Such efforts can also avoid irresponsible traders from raising the price of their products on grounds of wishing to meet the purchase cost,” he said at a media conference after launching the programme ‘Let’s Do It MalaysiaEco and Biodegradable Day’ here yesterday.

Earlier, when reading the text of Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Mhd Amin Nordin Abd Aziz’s speech, Ibrahim said the initiative for the ‘ Let’s Do It Malaysia’ programme aimed to create public awareness on the danger of using polystyrene.

“Beginning Sept 1, all traders and hawkers will be subjected to a new enforcement whereby those using plastic packaging and polystyrene food containers will be slapped with a RM1,000 compound,” he added. — Bernama
