Airforce Flystick B win Bau Fest hockey in cliff-hanger final

KUCHING: Airforce Flystick B were made to sweat by their final opponents Unixx HC before claiming the Men’s Open crown in the Bau Hockey Festival hockey tournament that ended at the Sarawak Hockey Stadium along Jalan Padungan last Sunday.

The challenge was so stiff that the eventual winner had to be decided on a “sudden death” penalty shootout after both teams were tied 00 at full-time. But luck was with Airforce Flystick as they edged Unixx HC 3-2 after they were again level 2- 2 in the penalty strokes shoot- out.

Third place went to Warrior HC from Miri.

All Div captured the Women’s Open title after winning four matches and drawing once in the six-team league competitio­n. First runners-up were Luctor who registered three wins, one draw and one defeat.

Meanwhile, SMK Bako were in a class of their own after sweeping the Boys’ Under-17 and Girls’ U17 titles.

The boys beat SMK Kedit in a penalty stroke shoot- out while the girls beat SMK Sri Matang 10. SMK Columba of Miri were third in both categories.

Warrior HC took the Veteran title after beating KHC Remixs on penalty strokes after both teams were tied on the same points in a round robin league.

Five hundred players from 35 hockey clubs and secondary schools took part in the competitio­n from Feb 11-12.

The event was co- organised by the Sarawak Ex-Hockey Players Associatio­n and Xplayers HC with support from Sarawak Sports Corporatio­n, Sarawak State Sports Council and Serembu state assemblyma­n Miro Simuh.

The prizes were given away by Sarawak Ex- Hockey Players Associatio­n deputy president Rudi Naziri and secretary Desmond Labang who represente­d Miro and the associatio­n’s president Haidel Heli.
