It’s a Malaysia-Indonesia showdown
KUCHING: Indonesia A sprang an upset in the team event of the 3rd Southeast Asian Cup Squash Championship at the Sarawak Squash Centre inPetra Jaya yesterday when they sent defending champions Singapore packing 4-1 in the semi-fi nals.
The Indonesians were in control to take the fi rst three points with Ade Furqon beating Pang Ka Hoe 3- 0 (11- 4, 11- 2, 11- 8) in the men’s singles, Catur Yuliana beating Au Yeong Wai Yham 3- 0 (11- 6, 11- 8, 117) in the women’s singles and Ade Furqon-Agung Wilant outplaying Chua Man Tong-Timothy Leong 2- 0 (11-10, 11- 9) in the men’s doubles.
Singapore replied with a win in the women’s doubles where Au Yeong Wai Yham- Mao Shi Hui defeated Catur Yuliana-Rinduri Maulida Arnasty 2-1 (5-11, 11- 9, 118) before Indonesia grabbed the fourth point in the mixed doubles where Ade Furqon- Catur Yuliana did not face much resistance to beat Mao Shi Hui-Pang Ka Hoe 2- 0 (11- 8, 11- 5).
Indonesia A wi l l now face Malaysia in today’s fi nal after the host team swept aside Philippines 4- 0 in the other semi-fi nal.
Mohad Syafiq Mohd Kamal delivered the first point for Malaysia by beating Robert Garcia 3-1 (11- 6, 7-11, 11-9, 11-3) in the men’s singles and Chan Yiwen followed up the winning momentum with a 3-1 ( 8-11, 11-7, 11- 5, 11-7) win over Jemyca Aribaldo in the women’s singles. Mohd Adden Idrakie and Sanjay Singh Chal then outgunned Lydio Espinola Junior and Robert Garcia 2- 0 (11- 6, 11-7) in the men’s doubles while Ooi Kah Yan-Rachel Mae Arnold wrapped the victory for Malaysia with a 2- 0 (11-2, 11- 6) win over Jemyca Aribaldo-Yvonne Alyssa Dalida in the women’s doubles. — by Ting Tieng Hee
