Proposed College Laila Taib in Mukah may run martime courses
SIBU: More suitable programmes have been suggested for inclusion in the proposed Mukah branch of College Laila Taib (KLT).
Second Minister of Finance Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh in saying this said the proposed Mukah branch would offer more suitable programmes to suit the local needs and environment.
“Discussions are being held and a maritime programme at the Sarawak Maritime Academy is maybe one of the suitable courses to be introduced at KLT Mukah branch,” said Wong, who is also chairman of the KLT board of directors at the college’s fifth convocation ceremony here yesterday.
He was representing Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.
A total of 115 graduates from six programmes, namely architecture, civil engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, quantity surveying and business management received their diploma at the convocation ceremony. Wong, who is also Bawang Assan assemblyman, said KLT had been discussing with the maritime academy at Upper Lanang here to have the course conducted at KLT Mukah branch.
“Mukah is situated by the sea and is therefore in a better position to train seafarers, crew, cadet officers and even captains of oceangoing vessels.
“There are already four colleges in Mukah. All are running technical courses either at certificate, diploma or university level.
“KLT Mukah branch has to offer something different like maritime courses,” he said.
KLT chief executive officer Eric Wong Kwong Lee also spoke at the function.
Dato Sri Mahmud Abu Bekir Mahmud, Temenggong Vincent Lau Lee Ming, Temenggong Stanley Gramong and Soon Koh’s wife Datin Sri Pauline Leong were also present at the function.
