-

MIRI: Folk in Bario learnt more about their rights as consumers and traders during a consumerism dialogue with community leaders organised by the Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism ( KPDNKK) there recently.

The event organised in collaboration with Miri Consumers Movement was in conjunction with a working visit to Bario by Deputy Minister of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Datuk Henry Sum Agong.

The programme started with talks covering topics such as consumer rights, the functions and roles of Metrology Corporation Malaysia ( MCM) as well as roles and functions of Cooperative College of Malaysia ( Maktab Koperasi Malaysia).

A team from MCM were also present to carry out reverification and re- stamping of weighing scales for traders there.

At the function, MCM also sponsored 12 digital weighing scales for selected traders to replace their old ones, as part of MCM’s corporate social responsibility ( CSR) initiatives.

After the dialogue, the organiser also visited traders and several KPDNKK point- ofsales ( POS) outlets in Bario.

Also present during the programme were State Legislative Assembly deputy speaker and Mulu assemblyman Datuk Gerawat Gala, KPDNKK secretary- general Datuk Seri Jamil Salleh, Sarawak KPDNKK director Datuk Stanley Tan, Miri KPDNKK chief Jo Azmi, MCM chief operation officer Ahmad Sholihan as well as MCM adviser Mohd Khalis Kasim.

As the programme coincided with Henry’s birthday, the organiser also surprised the deputy minister with a birthday cake on stage.

Additionally, making Henry’s visit to Bario a memorable one, Kelabit elders conducted a ceremony to give him a Kelabit name.

He was named ‘ Bela’an Tauh’, which roughly translates as ‘a well known or well-talked about leader’.
