Taxi passenger jailed 2 years 8 months for cheating

SIBU: Chieng Kai Hock, 35, was sentenced to two years and eight months in jail and two strokes of the cane by a Magistrate­s’ Court here yesterday after he pleaded guilty to cheating and dishonestl­y inducing delivery of property, and drug abuse.

The charge on cheating was framed under Section 420 of the Penal Code which provides for a minimum one year but not more than 10 years’ jail, whipping and a possible fine.

He committed the offence between 9am and 10am on Feb 12 in front of a bank in Central Road. He cheated taxi driver Lau Ying Tee, 59, by asking for RM100 from him but did not return the money as promised.

Earlier, Chieng asked Lau to send him to a bank in Central Road and when they reached the place, Chieng got out of the taxi and entered the bank. He returned to the taxi a short while later, and asked for RM100 from Lau. When Lau refused, Chieng said he would not get out of the taxi. He also told Lau that as soon as he reached the hotel, he would return the money and pay the taxi fare.

However, when they reached the hotel, Chieng got out of the taxi and never returned. For the offence, he was sentenced to two years’ jail and two strokes of the cane. The drug abuse case was framed under Section 15(1)( a) of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952 which carries a fine not more than RM5,000 or a jail term of not more than two years and must undergo at least two years of supervisio­n after the sentence.

According to the charge, Chieng tested positive for methamphet­amine and amphetamin­e at the central police station here at 10.40pm on March 23 last year. For the offence, he was fined RM3,500 in default eight months’ jail and ordered to undergo two years’ supervisio­n. He did not pay the fine.

Meanwhile, Mohd Shahrul Fadzillah Yunus. 23, was jailed for 18 months after he pleaded guilty to a misappropr­iation of property charge.

He was charged under Section 403 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of not less than six months and not more than five years, whipping and also liable to a fine. He committed the offence at about 8am on Dec 2 last year at a school compound in Wong King Huo Road. He was caught using a motorcycle belonging to Mohammad Falfan Johnny, 32.
