Jamilah not to be sworn in anytime soon, says DUN secretary
As she is still observing the ‘eddah’, there is still no directive yet for her to take her oath of office as the new Tanjong Datu assemblywoman.
KUCHING: Newly elected Tanjong Datu assemblywoman Datin Patinggi Datuk Amar Jamilah Anu will not be sworn anytime soon as she is still observing the ‘ eddah’ (mourning period according to Islam), says State Legislative Assembly ( DUN) secretary Supian Tarmizi.
According to him, Jamilah might be sworn in before or during the DUN Sitting to be held sometime in May.
“As she is still observing the ‘eddah’, there is still no directive yet for her to take her oath of office as the new Tanjong Datu assemblywoman,” Supian said when contacted yesterday.
In the just concluded Tanjong Datu by- election, Jamilah defended the seat for the BN with a landslide 6,443 majority votes.
She polled 6,573 votes while her opponents State Reform Party ( STAR) candidate Johnny Aput garnered 108 votes, while Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak Baru ( PBDS Baru) candidate Rapelson Richard Hamit had 130 votes.
Both subsequently lost their deposits.

Since Jamilah is still observing the ‘eddah’, her son Azizul Annuar Adenan, represented his mother at the tallying centre in Lundu last Saturday where the announcement was made by Returning Officer Hamsein Atar.
Azizul said he would assist his mother to continue serving the people of Tanjong Datu especially in the next few months while his mother was still observing the mourning period.
The seat fell vacant following the demise of Jamilah’s husband and former chief minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem on Jan 11 at the Sarawak Heart Centre in Kota Samarahan. He was 72.
In the last state election held in May last year, Adenan defeated PKR candidate Jazolkipli Numan with a majority of 5,892 votes. He polled 6,360 votes against Jozolfipli’s 468 votes.
Adenan had been the Tanjong Datu assemblyman since 2006 when the seat was first created. Before that he was a long time elected representative of Muara Tuang.
He was also a one-term MP for Sadong Jaya from 2004-2008.
