Better state STPM results this year with CGPA 2.59

KUCHING: Sarawak has shown very satisfacto­ry Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia ( STPM) result this year with Cumulative Grade Point Average ( CGPA) up from 2.48 in 2015 to 2.59 last year.

In a press statement received here yesterday, state Education director Rakayah Madon said a total of 5,290 candidates sat for the exam in Sarawak last year compared with 5,466 in 2015.

From the figure 5,272 candidates (99.65 pct) came from government schools while 18 ( 0.34 pct) were private candidates.

A total of 4,680 candidate ( 98.11 pct) obtained STPM certificat­es in 2015 compared with 4,861 candidates ( 96.39 pct) last year, an increase of 1.72 pct.

Thirteen candidates ( 0.27 pct) passed in five subjects ( 5P), 3,075 ( 64.47 pct) passed in four subjects (4P), 817 (17:13 pct) passed in three subjects (3P), 455 (9: 54 pct) passed in 2 subjects ( 2P) and 320 ( 6.71 pct) passed in one subject (1P) last year.

In terms of individual achievemen­t, 58 or 1.26 pct of candidates from government schools achieved the maximum CGPA of 4.00 in 2016 compared to 18 or 0.36 pct in 2015.

This performanc­e demonstrat­es the increasing number of candidates getting a maximum CGPA of 4.00 compared to 2015, an increase of 40 candidates.

Candidates numbering 1,428 or 29.94 pct have CGPA of 3.00 compared to 1,256 candidates or 24.9 pct in 2015, an increase of 5.04 pct.

A total of 21 schools achieved very impressive 2016 STPM results with CGPA of more than 2.80.

The top 10 schools are SMK Sacred Heart, Sibu ( CGPA3.36), SMK Chung Hua, Sibu (CGPA3.17), SMK Tung Hua, Sibu CGPA 3.07), SMK St Thomas, Kuching ( CGPA3.02), SMK Lanang, Sibu ( CGPA2.99), SMK Bandar Sibu ( CGPA2.98), SMK Jalan Oya, Sibu ( CGPA2.97), SMK Tarat, Samarahan ( CGPA2.97), SMK Methodist, Sibu ( CGPA2.93) and SMK Chung Hua Miri (CGPA2.91)

A total of 4,768 candidates took the compulsory General Paper and 4,065 passed ( 85.26 pct).

Other popular art stream subjects such as Bahasa Malaysia had 3,658 candidates sitting for the exam and 3,191 passed ( 87.33 pct), History had 2,351 candidates and 1,909 passed, Geography had 1,437 candidates and 1,184 passed or 81.20 pct, Economics had 1,040 candidates and 756 passed or 72.69 pct, Visual Arts had 1,098 candidates and 1,068 passed (97.27 pct) and Business Studies had 1,372 candidates and 1,086 passed (79.15 pct).

In science stream, the highest number of candidates passsed was in Sport Science where 108 candidates sat and 104 passed ( 96.30 pct).

This is followed by Chemistry with 645 candidates ( 571 passed or 88.50 pct), Biology with 362 candidates ( 307 passed or 84.80 pct), physics with 294 candidates ( 239 passed or 81.30 pct) and Mathematic­s with 653 candidates ( 525 passed or 80.40 pct).

Last year’s results also showed a significan­t improvemen­t in 17 out of 21 subjects compared to 2015, with ICT subject having 100 pct passes.

Thirteen candidates who sat for the exam all passed.
