Man jailed for giving support, possession of items related to terrorism

KUALA LUMPUR: A boiler maintenanc­e personnel was sentenced to a total of six years’ jail by the High Court here yesterday for giving support and possession of items related to the Daesh terrorist group.

Judge Datuk Azman Abdullah handed down the sentence on Roshelmyza­n Husain, 33, after the father of two pleaded guilty to the two charges.

He was sentenced to four years’ jail on the charge of giving support to the terrorist group and two years’ jail for possession of items related to terrorism.

However, Azman ordered Roshelmyza­n to serve the jail sentences concurrent­ly from the date of his arrest on June 29 last year.

In the judgment, Azman said the court took into account the accused’s guilty plea and regret, but the punishment had to reflect the firmness of the court so that others would not commit the same mistake.

Roshelmyza­n pleaded guilty to giving support to the Daesh group through the Telegram applicatio­n in the chat group “Gagak Hitam” on his handphone at Telok Kapas, Rantau Panjang, Klang, at 7.57 am on March 30, 2016.

The charge, under Section 130J( 1)( a) of the Penal Code, provides an imprisonme­nt for life, or imprisonme­nt for up to 30 years, or with fine, and shall also be liable to forfeiture of any property used in connection with the commission of the offence.

For possession of terrorismr­elated items, he admitted to having in his possession a video and an image relating to the Daesh group on his handphone at Sime Darby Plantation­s Sdn Bhd Building, Nuri Refinery, Lebuh Sultan Muhamed 1, Kawasan Perusahaan PKNS Fasa 2, Bandar Sultan Sulaiman, Port Klang, at 2.10 pm on June 29, 2016.

The charge was made under Section 130JB (1)(a) of the Penal Code and punishable with an imprisonme­nt for up to seven years, or with fine, and shall also be liable to forfeiture of items of the items, upon conviction.

In mitigation, Roshelmyza­n, represente­d by lawyers Syahredzan Johan and Louis Liow, said he was remorse and promised not to repeat the mistake, which was his first offence.
