No date fixed yet for mandatory display of reflector stickers on vehicle sides

KUCHING: The government has agreed to enforce the mandatory display of reflector stickers ( MS 828: 2011) to be displayed only at the back of commercial vehicles.

The mandatory display of reflector stickers on the left and right sides of commercial vehicles will be enforced at a later date, said the Road Transport Department (JPJ) in a statement yesterday.

Starting Jan 1 this year, all commercial vehicles with maximum permissible laden weight ( BDM) of 3,500kg and above were required to display the reflector stickers on the left and right side as well as the rear of the vehicle.

“However, the government has decided that (for now) only the display of the reflector stickers at the back of the vehicle be mandatory effective immediately,” said the statement.

JPJ nevertheless noted that this was not the first time the government had postponed the enforcement of displaying reflector stickers as it had done so several times since 2003.

“The safety factor ought to be given priority and should not be compromised. We hope that full enforcement of displaying the reflectors can be realised soon in the future.”

On the sale of the reflector stickers, JPJ said they were sold through dealer companies as well as through booths at the Computerised Vehicle Inspection Centre ( Puspakom).

“The sale of these reflectors are controlled by the company to ensure that counterfeit products are not rampant and that consumers will not be deceived by certain parties who are looking to reap profit.

“The company has informed consumers looking to buy in bulk to purchase the reflectors directly through the dealer companies.”

It added that sale through booths at Puspakom branches nationwide were also controlled in order to give priority to vehicles which were undergoing checks at Puspakom that no longer had the reflector.

On the other hand, JPJ also welcomed any company which had obtained the MS 828: 2011 certification from Sirim to sell the reflector stickers for the purpose of this enforcement.

“Currently, only two companies have obtained the MS 828: 2011 certification from Sirim namely Orafol Reflective Solutions ( Malaysia) Sdn Bhd and 3M Malaysia Sdn Bhd.

“However, the selling of reflector stickers made by 3M Malaysia has been temporarily postponed until it has been verified again by Sirim.”
