KUCHING: SMK St Thomas emerged as the top school in Kuching with a cumulative grade point average ( CGPA) of 3.02 in the 2016 Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM) exams.

In 2015, its CGPA in the exams was 2.65.

From a total of 118 candidates from the school sitting for STPM in 2016, 11 obtained four straight As.

The school’s Parent-Teacher Association chairperson Kurnia Mohd Bujang said the school was very happy and satisfied with the results.

“We are very proud of the performance this year as compared to 2015 and the teachers have worked very hard to achieve these results. This is due to the commitment of all the teachers, students and parents,” she said when met at the school on Tuesday.

“Compared to last year, this year’s results has improved so much and has definitely increased tremendously,” she added.

Kurnia thanked the teachers for doing a marvellous job in making this year’s results more commendable.

“Our target next year is to have better results and if possible 100 per cent. It depends on the students as the teachers would give all their effort and do their part,” she said.

She noted that all teachers were ecstatic when they saw the results and some were in tears as they were the top school in Kuching and fourth overall in Sarawak.

For Najla Qarliisha Omar Alli, she shed tears of joy when she flipped open her STPM result slip as soon it was given to her by one

“I did not expect such results but I was prepared for the examination. I made sure that I did a full and thorough revision in all the four subjects that I took. I am very happy and satisfied with the result,” she said.

Omar Alli, who was very happy that his eldest daughter and child obtained four straight As, said his daughter had worked very hard for the exams.

“I let her decide what she wanted to do but most importantly, she has shown a great example for her three siblings who are younger than her,” he added.
