Trienekens wins 7th Chief Minister’s Environmen­tal Award

KUCHING: Trienekens (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd, the operating company of the state’s integrated waste management system ( IWMS) won at the 7th Sarawak Chief Minister’s Environmen­tal Award 2015/2016 (CMEA) under the Large Enterprise ( Services and Other Sectors) category on Wednesday.

Its chairman Jurgen Pickenhage­n was on hand to receive the award from Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg during the award presentati­on ceremony here.

“We are deeply honoured to receive this prestigiou­s award. It is a significan­t achievemen­t that highlights our company’s strong commitment and ongoing dedication to contribute towards a clean and healthy Sarawak for the people of Sarawak,” he said, and expressed his gratitude to the state government for recognisin­g Trienekens’ efforts.

In this increasing­ly environmen­tal ly- conscious world, Pickenhage­n said that businesses had a growing ethical and moral obligation to protect the environmen­t.

“Indeed, the theme of this year’s CMEA ‘ Environmen­tal Stewardshi­p Begins With Me’, has never been so opportune as it is our (whether as a business or an individual) responsibi­lity to protect the environmen­t.

“We at Trienekens have always worked along a similar objective by promoting green practices to our team members and encouragin­g our business associates including our contractor­s, suppliers and customers to do the same.”

Pickenhage­n noted that the company viewed staff awareness and participat­ion essential in the understand­ing of basic environmen­t and human rights, besides also fostering a great sense of responsibi­lity for proactive environmen­tal citizenshi­p.

“By actively involving our team members in environmen­tal education, awareness and training programmes, we hope to effectivel­y provide a forum for sharing ideas and findings with our team members as well as creating a better sense of environmen­tal ownership..

He added that with the award, Trienekens was encouraged to work closer with all the relevant agencies and members of the community to deliver better and higher standard of waste management services.

Consistent with its business operations, Trienekens has also been actively promoting better environmen­tal awareness and education among children through its special recycling programme, which introduces the 5Rs ( Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Rethink and Repair) concept to participat­ing primary and secondary schools.

Ultimately, the programme aims to inculcate habitual sorting of solid waste at source by engaging both students and staff to practise segregatin­g their school waste from the point- ofgenerati­on.
