I reported it to the District Office and Social Welfare Department. They came over to inspect and Social Welfare Department told me they would assist but I don’t know the kind of assistance. I built this house 18 months ago. I estimate my loss to be about RM15,000.

KAPIT: Bukit Goram assemblyman Jefferson Jamit yesterday went around his constituency to check on houses and areas that were affected by soil erosion despite the heavy rain.

He was accompanied by Kapit District Office administrative officer Anyie Awing, Fire and Rescue Station officer Irwandy Tugor, staff from Kapit Parliament Service Centre and Bukit Goram Service Centre–Edward Manggah and Alexson Nilai and Cochran Amos, councillor Liew Hui Hua, SUPP Kapit secretary Ling Thian Ing and others.

First, they visited the badly damaged single– storey concrete house at Genturong Iban Bersatu, Sungai Sebabi along Jalan Antaroh, belonging to 49-yearold Kaya Muda.

The house erected on a hill slope was badly damaged on Wednesday afternoon when soil from the upper slope crashed on its wall.

Kaya said the falling earth caused the wall to collapse, leaving behind mud and water. His bedroom and his car porch were totally destroyed.

“I reported it to the District Office and Social Welfare Department. They came over to inspect and Social Welfare Department told me they would assist but I don’t know the kind of assistance.

“I built this house 18 months ago. I estimate my loss to be about RM15,000,” Kaya said.

He added that during his visit, Jamit instructed the Public Works Department to assess the

damage and carry out remedial work.

“He also promised to help through his MRP fund,” added Kaya.

Later, Jamit and his entourage visited Rumah Champok along Jalan Bukit Goram and also Melatai, Jalan Selirik.

Jamit advised those living in houses built on hill slopes or along the river banks to exercise extra caution during this wet season.

“In Kapit, because of the rugged terrain and numerous rivers and streams, during wet season like this, our main concern is hill slope erosion or landslide affecting those residents.

“Residents of longhouses along the river banks should be extra alert because of the sudden surge of water and flash floods caused by the continuous rain,” advised Jamit

“Safety is my main concern. I don’t want any mishap to happen, causing suffering or loss of property.

“Although we can’t stop soil erosion or landslide, the least we can do is to take precautionary measures for our own safety and to prevent losses,” he added.
