-

MIRI: There was an overwhelming response towards the public health talk titled ‘Healthy Heart’ organised on Feb 23 at the auditorium of Pustaka Negeri Sarawak, Miri.

The library’s public relations officer Sofi na Tan in a statement said some 280 people came for the talk delivered by Dr Teh Yeon Chiat, a physician from Miri Hospital’s Medical Department.

The talk aimed to educate the public on how to take care of the heart, especially when the number of deaths caused by coronary heart diseases in Malaysia is showing an alarming increase.

Dr Teh said it was important to take good care of the heart to prevent future misfortune by leading a healthy lifestyle, adding that individuals should exercise at least three times a week with a minimum of one hour for each session.

She also said it was necessary for one to have a healthy diet and elaborated on the recommended portions for intake of various foods using the palm of one’s hand as a measurement.

“As the durian season is currently setting in, one should not indulge in it excessively as durian contains high levels of sugar and is high in cholesterol.

“Instead of teh c peng (iced tea with milk), go for teh o peng (iced tea without milk), less sugar. Over time, you will get used to it and should opt for sugar-free drinks,” she said.

Dr Teh also spoke on the causes of coronary heart disease and available treatment called coronary angioplasty. In Sarawak, the said treatment is only available in Kuching.

Meanwhile, members of the public are invited to two upcoming public talks which will be held at Pustaka: ‘ Protect Our Children From Sexual Abuse’ by ngohub.asia’s social activist Syed Azmi Alhabshi on March 11 and ‘Woman, Wife, Mother & The Law’ by syari’e practitioner Raihan Usop on March 15.

Both talks will take place in the auditorium, starting from 2: 30pm. Admission is free. However, those interested to attend are advised to register early as seats are limited.
