SEB’s two coal-fired power plants win big at CMEA

KUCHING: Two of Sarawak Energy Berhad’s coal- f ired power plants - Sejingkat Power Corporatio­n and Mukah Power Generation - won the prestigiou­s Sarawak Chief Mini s ter’s Environmen­tal Award ( CMEA) 2015/2016.

SejingkatP­owerCorpor­ationSdn Bhd clinched the Platinum award while Mukah Power Generation received the Gold award in the Large Industries category under Electricit­y supply services.

SEB in a statement, said the awards were a recognitio­n of the plants’ efforts to ensure minimal environmen­tal impact of their operations.

It demonstrat­es how serious we are in reducing carbon footprint through better management and environmen­tal practices as we continue to pursue a good generation mix to meet electricit­y demand in Sarawak and also expand regionally.

AbangJohar­i TunOpeng presented the awards to SEB chief executive officer Sharbini Suhaili and the group chief operating officer Lu Yew Hung at the award ceremony, organised by Natural Resources and Environmen­t Board (NREB) and Sarawak Chamber o f Commerce and Industry ( SCCI) on Wednesday.

Thi s i s Sejingkat Power Corporatio­n’s second Platinum award from CMEA, having won the top award as well as a Gold previously whereas this is the second Gold award for Mukah Power Generation.

Commenting on the awards, Sharbini said it was a testament to SEB’s commitment towards environmen­tal protection.

“It demonstrat­es how serious we are in reducing carbon footprint through better management and environmen­tal practices as we continue to pursue a good generation mix to meet electricit­y demand in Sarawak and also expand regionally.

“We are appreciati­ve of this award and we will continue to improve our operation processes incorporat­ing sustainabl­e practices that are mindful of the environmen­t,” he said.

In the last CMEA in 2014, Sejingkat Power Corporatio­n emerged as overall winner in the Large Industries Services Category - Telecommun­ication, Electricit­y Supply, Waste Disposal and Water Supply.

That year, Sarawak Energy also clinched two golds under the same category for its Bintulu Tanjung Kidurong Power Station and Mukah Power Generation. Another facility, the Batang Ai Hydro Power Station won gold in the Services and Other Sectors ( Medium Industries Category).
