SUPP to hold education seminars for SPM, STPM school leavers

KUCHING: In conjunctio­n with the announceme­nt of SPM (March 16) and STPM ( Feb 28) results, Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Youth Central Education Bureau will be conducting a series of Malaysia Higher Education Seminars and Counsellin­g sessions for those who just obtained their SPM or STPM results.

According to SUPP Youth chief Tan Kai, the seminars which are open to the public, will be held throughout the state in Kuching, Sibu, Miri, Sarikei, Limbang and Bintulu.

“Seminars that will be held across the state are meant to enlighten students and parents on the latest informatio­n on courses offered by local public universiti­es ( IPTA), scholarshi­ps and study loans, entry requiremen­ts, and assistance for IPTA on-line applicatio­ns.

“In addition, apart from seminars and one-to- one counsellin­g sessions, SUPP Youth Central Education Bureau will also host counsellin­g on Facebook for those who are unable to attend our counsellin­g,” he told a press conference at SUPP headquarte­rs here yesterday.

Tan, who is a political secretary to the Chief Minister, said for the seminars in Kuching Division, two seminars will be conducted separately— for STPM on March 4 ( Saturday) and SPM on March 18 ( Saturday)— at 7pm at Dewan Sa’ati in SUPP headquarte­rs.

“Apart from the experience­d speakers from SUPP Youth Central Education Bureau, for the first seminar on March 4, we are also inviting two experience­d speakers; firstly, Associate Prof Dr Chin Suk Fun from Universiti Malaysia Sarawak ( Unimas) to hold a sharing session about local university life in Unimas.

“The other one is an officer from National Higher Education Fund Corporatio­n ( PTPTN) who will speak on the procedure to apply for PTPTN loans and at the same time, there will be a booth set up for parents and students who attend the seminar to register the SSPN ( National Education Savings Scheme) account.”

For the second seminar on March 18, Tan said SUPP Youth Central Education Bureau are also arranging for an officer from Public Service Commission ( SPA) to deliver a session on the applicatio­n procedures for SPM or STPM school leavers who are interested to apply for technical training programmes under the government sector, such as for nurse, medical assistant and agricultur­e.

“Therefore, all students and parents are encouraged to attend our seminars. For those who want to be updated on our events, they can join our Facebook group with the name ‘SUPP Youth Higher Education Counseling’.

Similar seminars will be held in Sarikei and Sibu on March 11. The seminar in Sarikei will be held at 1pm at Wawasan Inn Hotel while the seminar in Sibu will be held at 7pm at Sa’ati Hall in SUPP Sibu.

The seminar in Miri will be held on March 18 at the 4th Floor of SUPP Piasau Branch Multipurpo­se Hall at 10.30am while the seminar in Bintulu will be held on March 19 at SUPP office, Bintulu Central at 1pm. As for Limbang, the date and venue of the seminar will be fixed at a later date.

Also present during the press conference were SUPP Youth Education Bureau chief Lai Huat Choi, SUPP Youth Central executive secretary Kenny Yek, SUPP Youth Central treasurer Mok Chuan Ping, SUPP Central Executive Committee member Li Soon Keah, SUPP Youth committee member Peter Pau and SUPP Kuching branch youth member Alex Chai.
