Single mothers to hold food sale to raise funds

KUCHING: Sarawak Single Mothers Associatio­n ( Pitsa) will be holding a charity food fair to raise funds at the Christian Ecumenical Centre here on Aug13.

“I urge members of the public to support the associatio­n so that with the money raised, they can carry out activities to help single mothers,” Minister of Welfare, Women and Community Wellbeing Datuk Fatimah Abdullah told a press conference at her office here yesterday.

She said most of the single mothers were not highly educated; thus, it was not easy for them to get employment. But, their spirit to be independen­t to raise their children was very encouragin­g.

She said to help single mothers, the ministry had opened four types of courses to help them, namely cooking, sewing, beauty, and spa and massage.

financial status in order to raise their children and have a roof over their heads.

“Upon completion of the training, they can make a living from home while looking after their children,” she said.

She also said the ministry was training single mothers to be leaders at home without a father figure to raise successful children.

According to Fatimah, who is also the associatio­n’s advisor, 56 per cent of members were divorcees and the rest widows.

It has about 14,000 members in 49 branches throughout Sarawak.

Pitsa president Salmah Ibrahim, Women and Family Department of Sarawak director Noriah Ahmad were also present at the press conference.
