MMS, Canning College offer pathways into Australian universities
KUCHING: Market Management Services Sdn Bhd ( MMS) located here with representative offices throughout Sarawak and Sabah has been placing students for further studies in schools, colleges and universities overseas for 30 years.
Since its early days, MMS has been closely associated with Canning College in Perth, Western Australia— a senior government college specialising in preparing both local Australians and overseas students for further tertiary education through its many programmes.
Canning College principal Alan Genoni recently received the Secondary Principal of the Year award for 2016 by the Department of Education ( Western Australia) in recognition of his outstanding work as principal.
“Academic success and welfare of students are the two key markers to win this award. Other contributing factors include academic performance of our students, recommendation of the college board as well as the contribution towards development of the education system in Western Australia.
“Winning this award helps the whole school, teachers and students, to feel proud of what the school is doing with the wonderful work that is being done in the school. Malaysians students share this award as well for their excellent academic performance which shows just how well Malaysian students have done at Canning College—Malaysians are very clever people,” Genoni said during a press conference held at MMS here on Tuesday.
For more than 30 years, Canning College has been hosting students from Sabah and Sarawak. The record of achievement for Malaysian students is very strong at Canning College.
Genoni revealed that in the 2016 Western Australian Universities’ Foundation Programme, Malaysian students dominated the top academic results.
“Of the top achievers— students who achieved a Combined Percentage Score of 75 per cent or higher— 54 per cent were Malaysian and 43 per cent of those students were awarded university scholarships for 2017.
“This is a truly excellent record of achievement by the 2016 Malaysian students,” he said.
He pointed out that there are many other great stories from Canning’s 2016 cohort of Malaysian students. Students have gained places into great courses at the University of Western Australia, Curtin University, Murdoch University, Macquarie University, Deakin University and others.
He also acknowledged the contribution of Malaysian students, especially from Kuching, who have excelled in their academic performance.
“Our students fromKuchinghave been recognised as among our top students at Canning College and we are highly grateful for students coming from Kuching.”
The top student for 2016, Isaac Ng from Kuching, scored 95.3 per cent in the Western Australian Universities’ Foundation Programme. On the basis of his excellent achievement, the University of Western Australia admitted Ng into a Bachelor of Science course and awarded him a special Winthrop Scholarship for 2017.
Another achievement worth noting is that of Chhoa Jia Wen, also from Kuching, who has been admitted into the University of Western Australia’s new Direct Pathway to Medicine programme.
Selection for entry into this new course is highly competitive.
As for Kuchingite Nicholas Tiong, he has also achieved excellent results in Canning’s Foundation programme and in 2017 he will read Law at Murdoch University.
Tiong was awarded a scholarship by the university.
For the past 10 years, Canning College has been led by Genoni as principal.
Under his stewardship, Canning has maintained its reputation for excellence in providing pathways to university for domestic and international students.
