Kuok Foundation announces annual scholarshi­ps to deserving undergrads

KUCHING: The Kuok Foundation Bhd has announced its yearly grant of scholarshi­ps and awards to help needy Malaysians studying at or applying to Malaysian and Singaporea­n public universiti­es for full-time undergradu­ate programme in the 2017/2018 academic term.

The foundation offers four types of scholarshi­ps to those studying at or applying to Malaysian universiti­es.

The Kuok Keng Kang Scholarshi­ps – named after Robert Kuok’s late father – and the Wilmar Scholarshi­ps, sponsored by Wilmar Internatio­nal Ltd, each is worth RM15,000 annually.

The Goh Ing Sing Agricultur­e Science Scholarshi­ps at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), sponsored by Wilmar Internatio­nal Ltd and Kuok Khoon Hong, also contribute RM15,000 annually. This is a new scholarshi­ps, named in memory of the late Goh Ing Sing, who was the group plantation head of Wilmar Internatio­nal Ltd.

The Kuok Khoon Hong Scholarshi­ps is also valued at RM15,000 per annum.

For the Singaporea­n public universiti­es, the Kuok Foundation Scholarshi­ps valued at RM85,000 per annum, is a new scholarshi­p offered only to freshmen who are in receipt of the Singapore’s Ministry of Education Tuition Fee Grant.

The Wilmar Scholarshi­ps, sponsoredb­y Wilmar Internatio­nal Ltd, has a value of RM27,000 per annum.

Deserving candidates not selected for any of these scholarshi­ps will be considered for the Kuok Foundation LoanGrant Awards.

The loan portion, which is interest free, is repayable via monthly installmen­ts after graduation.

The value of the awards for Malaysian public universiti­es ranges from RM12,000 to RM14,000 per annum, depending on the courses taken, while the value for Singaporea­n public universiti­es is at RM27,000 per annum.

Applicatio­n forms can be obtained via www. kuokfounda­tion.com and the closing date for applicatio­n is March 31 this year.

The Kuok Foundation was set up by the Kuok family in 1970 to help address poverty, by way of reducing the economic disparity between the rich and poor communitie­s in Malaysia.

its wealth and good fortune with the less-fortunate.

Since 1970, the foundation has been providing financial assistance to needy individual­s to further their education at public and private universiti­es in Malaysia and also in Singapore, public polytechni­cs in both countries, as well as nursing colleges and vocational institutio­ns.

It also sets aside funding for social and welfare activities undertaken by non-government­al organisati­ons ( NGO) and other non-profit organisati­ons, despite its main focus on education.

The Wilmar Internatio­nal Ltd – founded in 1991 and headquarte­red in Singapore – is today Asia’s major agribusine­ss group.

It is ranked among the largest listed companies by market capitalisa­tion on the Singapore Exchange.

The group’s business activities include oil palm cultivatio­n, oilseed crushing, edible oils refining, sugar milling and refining, specialty fats, oleochemic­als, biodiesel and fertiliser manufactur­ing, as well as grain processing.

The group is backed by a multinatio­nal workforce of 92,000 people.
