Kuok Foundation announces annual scholarships to deserving undergrads
KUCHING: The Kuok Foundation Bhd has announced its yearly grant of scholarships and awards to help needy Malaysians studying at or applying to Malaysian and Singaporean public universities for full-time undergraduate programme in the 2017/2018 academic term.
The foundation offers four types of scholarships to those studying at or applying to Malaysian universities.
The Kuok Keng Kang Scholarships – named after Robert Kuok’s late father – and the Wilmar Scholarships, sponsored by Wilmar International Ltd, each is worth RM15,000 annually.
The Goh Ing Sing Agriculture Science Scholarships at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), sponsored by Wilmar International Ltd and Kuok Khoon Hong, also contribute RM15,000 annually. This is a new scholarships, named in memory of the late Goh Ing Sing, who was the group plantation head of Wilmar International Ltd.
The Kuok Khoon Hong Scholarships is also valued at RM15,000 per annum.
For the Singaporean public universities, the Kuok Foundation Scholarships valued at RM85,000 per annum, is a new scholarship offered only to freshmen who are in receipt of the Singapore’s Ministry of Education Tuition Fee Grant.
The Wilmar Scholarships, sponsoredby Wilmar International Ltd, has a value of RM27,000 per annum.
Deserving candidates not selected for any of these scholarships will be considered for the Kuok Foundation LoanGrant Awards.
The loan portion, which is interest free, is repayable via monthly installments after graduation.
The value of the awards for Malaysian public universities ranges from RM12,000 to RM14,000 per annum, depending on the courses taken, while the value for Singaporean public universities is at RM27,000 per annum.
Application forms can be obtained via www. kuokfoundation.com and the closing date for application is March 31 this year.
The Kuok Foundation was set up by the Kuok family in 1970 to help address poverty, by way of reducing the economic disparity between the rich and poor communities in Malaysia.

Since 1970, the foundation has been providing financial assistance to needy individuals to further their education at public and private universities in Malaysia and also in Singapore, public polytechnics in both countries, as well as nursing colleges and vocational institutions.
It also sets aside funding for social and welfare activities undertaken by non-governmental organisations ( NGO) and other non-profit organisations, despite its main focus on education.

The Wilmar International Ltd – founded in 1991 and headquartered in Singapore – is today Asia’s major agribusiness group.
It is ranked among the largest listed companies by market capitalisation on the Singapore Exchange.
The group’s business activities include oil palm cultivation, oilseed crushing, edible oils refining, sugar milling and refining, specialty fats, oleochemicals, biodiesel and fertiliser manufacturing, as well as grain processing.
