SUPP Senadin never fails to uphold spirit of filial piety
MIRI: The Senadin branch of Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) has always acknowledged and recognised the roles and contributions of senior citizens in the development of this city.
In this respect, members of SUPP Women Senadin conducted a visit to Miri Home for the Aged as part of their activities to commemorate Women’s Day.
The delegation was led by Datin Christina Kong who is the wife of Assistant Minister for Tourism Datuk Lee Kim Shin, who is also Senadin assemblyman.
“The visits by SUPP Women Senadin, individuals and other organisations always bring cheer to the residents.
“I believe many of them are feeling down, lonely and sad. They feel that they have been rejected, shunned and neglected by their families, relatives – even the society as whole,” said Sister Emily Ubong of Miri Home for the Aged.
She said visits from these individuals and organisations had helped give the residents the assurance that there were still people who cared about them. The home has 28 residents. “Some are Mirians; some are from outside, having made Miri their home after working and living here for a long time. Most of them are without any living family members and immediate relatives. They have opted to remain here as they have nowhere to go and nobody taking care of them as they are getting old.”
Miri Home for the Aged is run under by the Miri Chinese Charitable Trust Board.
In her remarks, Kong said: “It is important for the younger generation to be instilled with good and noble values such as honour, respect, care and concern about welfare and wellbeing of their elders, especially those who made a lot of sacrifices for them.
“As children, it is their duty and responsibility to take care of their ageing parents. Sending them to this kind of institution is not the right way – even if they’re busy with work or business.
“The care and love from one’s own flesh and blood are far different from those given by the caretakers.”
During the visit, Kong and her delegation presented each resident with a rose and treated them to a spread of food and drinks in celebration of Women’s Day.
