M’sian, S. Korean firefighters swap ideas for better services

-

KUCHING: Fire Commissioner of Seoul Fire Services Kwon Soon Kyung looks forward to exchanging skills and knowledge with the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department ( Bomba) to enhance service delivery.

During a working visit to the state Bomba headquarters here yesterday, the South Korean firefighter said he was impressed by a performance staged by his local counterparts.

“Even though South Korea and Malaysia are two different countries, after seeing how the firefighters here performed, I feel that we are all the same like friends, brothers or co-workers.

“Personally, I feel that Malaysia shares the same level of concern when it comes to saving lives. I am here to learn about the good points you have, and I want to do my best to be caring, help the people and save more lives,” he said in the presence of Bomba director- general Datuk Wira Wan Mohd Nor Ibrahim, state Bomba director Nor Hisham Mohammad and Kuching South Mayor Datuk James Chan.

Kwon, who is leading a five-member delegation here, described Wan Mohd Nor as a leader of ‘good quality and is humble’.

He thanked Wan Mohd Nor and Chan for making this visit a reality as he believed that such meeting would offer a platform for both countries to look at practical measures towards improving their services.

Meanwhile, Wan Mohd Nor said the first meeting between him and Kwon was vital, while extending his appreciation to Chan for the opportunity.

“Even though it’s a short meeting, it’s a fruitful one and hopefully, we would further improve our relationship that would benefit both sides.”

Wan Mohd Nor said he observed that the Seoul Fire Services had been offering good services for the people there.

“From what I see, the fire service in South Korea is one of the best in the world. They have a very good system. Natural disasters such as earthquakes happen in South Korea, but efficiency (of fire services) will reduce the suffering of victims. They have done their job very well.”

Wan Mohd Nor also invited Seoul Fire Services to visit Bomba headquarters in Kuala Lumpur.

“I’d like to extend my invitation to the fire commissioner to come and visit us in Kuala Lumpur – maybe next year. We are going to organise an international conference in April next year.”

It is learned that state Bomba has also been invited to send two representatives to Seoul next month for a fire safety conference there.
