SIBU: Bandong food court here will be given a major facelift costing RM1.6 million under phase three of the Bandong Walk development project.

Assistant Minister for Science Research and Biotechnology Dr Annuar Rapaee said yesterday the three- phase project was to transform the area into a halal food haven to turn it into a major attraction for food lovers.

He said that renovation works on the existing food court located at the shop lots besides Nangka Service Centre was expected to start next month and to be completed by year end. Dr Annuar added that this ( phase three) will complete the Bandong Walk development project.

The Nangka assemblyman also revealed that construction works on the second phase of Bandong Walk costing about RM200,000 which started few weeks ago would take at least seven months to complete. It is located immediately opposite phase one, and can accommodate about 15 stalls when completed.

“Bandong Walk project is divided into phases one, two and three. Phases one and two involved construction of a covered pedestrian path for hawkers.

renovation works should start by next month. As it is now, the food court looks rather messy so, we will put up a high rise roof, including levelling and tiling the floor,” he told The Borneo Post.

Dr Annuar said the funding for phases two and three came from the state government under the Rural Transformation Programme ( RTP).

Meanwhile, there are currently 22 traders at phase one of Bandong Walk selling a wide variety of local delicacies and merchandise.

However, he said stalls in phase two are not meant for selling food items but merchandise.

“Traders can sell garments, souvenir items and so on, but not food,” Dr Annuar explained.

He opined that Bringing Bandong Walk, Bandong Food Court and eateries within the Malay Union Club ( MUC) area together would go a long way to promote food tourism.

He also planned to install LEDs ( light- emitting diodes) to light up the area. Dr Annuar Rapaee has said there is a plan in the pipeline to upload activities in Bandong area onto the Facebook to entice people especially food lovers to come.
