IPOH: A total of 273 students from four schools here have been diagnosed with influenza-like illness ( ILI), said State Health, Public Transport, Non- Muslim Affairs and National Integration Committee chairman Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon.

He said of the total, 129 students were from Sekolah Raja Perempuan Taayah; 84 from Sekolah Tunku Abdul Rahman ( STAR), 57 from Sekolah Menengah Abdul Rahman Talib ( SMART) and three from Sekolah Kebangsaan Klebang.

He said 127 students of Sekolah Raja Perempuan Taayah from Form One to Five had been isolated, while two others were being treated at the Columbia Hospital in Taiping.

“Eight samples were taken from Sekolah Raja Perempuan Taayah with one of them testing positive for Influenza A (H3) or the seasonal flu, while another was confirmed as Influenza B,” he told reporters after visiting students infected with ILI at Sekolah Raja Perempuan Taayah and STAR here, yesterday.

The main symptoms of ILI are fever and sore throat, and can also cause headaches, muscle pain, joint pain, fatigue and flu.

Dr Mah said all students in STAR and Sekolah Kebangsaan Klebang had also been isolated and so far, no students were hospitalised.

In a statement released later yesterday, he said 41 of the 57 students infected at SMART were male, while the rest were female, all of them living in a hostel.

“A total of 29 students have been isolated at the hostel, while the rest have returned home.

“All of them are currently in stable condition,” he said, adding new cases were still being identified.

Dr Mah also urged the public to take preventive measures, and immediately seek treatment at a clinic or hospital if they experienced any of the symptoms. — Bernama
