Chong Wei wins 4th All-England title

SIBU: Traditiona­l powerhouse SMK Sacred Heart continued its dominance by lifting the overall title for a fifth consecutiv­e time at the 51st Sibu Division Schools Track & Field Championsh­ip at Stadium Tun Zaidi here last Friday.

The school swept all the boy’s categories - Under-18, U-15 and U14 - amassing 374 points with 28 gold, six silver and seven bronze medals.

Nearest challenger SMK Sedaya from Kanowit chalked up 277 points with five gold, eight silver and 12 bronze while SMK Kanowit tallied 233 points from 8- 9- 5 to finish third.

It was, however, not an easy victory with stiff challenges from SMK Sedaya which took the U-14 title and SMK Kanowit winning the U-15 category.

SMK Kanowit scored 321 points ( 12- 10- 13) whi le SMK Sedaya amassed 239 points (10- 8- 5).

SMK Ulu Balingian won a commendabl­e six gold, 10 silver and bronze while SMK Sibu Jaya, SMK Nanga Dap, SMk Bukit Assek, SMk Deshon, SM Catholic High, SMK Chung Hua and SMK Lanang managed to wrest at least two gold each.

A total of 12 new meet records were created during the four day meet.

The outstandin­g individual performanc­e also came from SMK Sacred Heart when Johnny Ling Siew Hong surpassed the Asean Schools record in the hammer throw with his distance of 66.40m.

Johnny took the best boy’s title in the U-18 division, Azarius Badin in U-15, Gabriel Ting in U-14 and Benedict Duau Dennis Unchat in U-12.

Josephine Danson was the best athlete for U-18, Melissa Lau Sze Ling for U-15, Carolina Elvisia Usin U-14 and Dabby Davina Jeffry U-12 for the girls.

Meanwhile, SMK Sacred Heart head coach Ting Kung Jin paid tribute to the school’s coaches.

Sibu Division Amateur Athletic Associatio­n ( SDAAA) president Dr Gregory Hii later gave away the prizes.
