Belaga, home to Bakun HEP, yearns for better facilities
BINTULU: Belaga District, home to the Bakun hydroelectric project, yearns for 24-hour electricity supply, treated water and better road connectivity.
A local community leader Awing Igo noted that Belaga has contributed much to nationbuilding hence, more development projects should be implemented in the district. He said he fully supported Belaga assemblyman Liwan Lagang in requesting for the state government to give priority to local people to be employed in the Bakun HEP project.
“Liwan felt that there is an urgent need to bring more development to our district as well as open up more opportunities to our local people to be employed by Bakun and Murum dams, but we are let down by the authority,” he said in a statement adding that the locals had sacrificed their land for the mammoth dams and they know their place much better.
“As has been mentioned by our Chief Minister ( Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg), we are grateful that the state government will acquire the Bakun dam and with that opportunity we beg to have more development in Belaga,” he added
For instance he said Belaga needed more development in terms of 24 hour electricity, treated water supply and better road.
“As of now, we have road connectivity which is always affected by flood, landslides and with many potholes. There is no alternative road to get there, besides that we need at least another four rural health clinics at Long Urun, Murum resettlement scheme of Long Matalun, Long Tegulang and Long Busang,” Awing said.
According to him, the promised health clinic in Long Busang has yet to take shape.
