Homeless former caretaker receives help from Hope Place

-

KUCHING: Hope Place recently provided ‘one- off’ assistance to Teo Siew Sian, a resident of Anjung Singgah along Jalan Rubber here.

The non- governmental organisation (NGO) in a statement yesterday said it received a call from Anjung Singgah seeking assistance to help Teo who hails from Miri.

“According to Anjung Singgah officer Ediawati, Teo has been working in Kuching for the past two years where she was the caretaker for a disabled person (OKU). Unfortunately, when the OKU’s father passed away two months ago, the OKU’s uncle fired her as he did not require her to care for the OKU any longer and asked her to move out of their house.

“Due to this incident, Teo had no choice but to seek shelter at Anjung Singgah where she has been staying for the past two months,” said Hope Place founder Kelvin Wan, who also noted that Teo’s husband passed away five years ago and she is left to care for her daughter who suffers from “left brain illness”.

Considering that Anjung Singgah is a temporary lodging and intervention centre, Wan said Teo would have to move out soon.

“As Anjung Singgah is aware of Teo’s predicament, they decided to contact us to provide her with oneoff assistance of food items as well as a mattress and towel because once she moves out she will have nothing to eat and also no money to buy a mattress.

“I was also informed that Trinity Church has expressed their willingness to sponsor her some capital to set up a small food stall at a coffee shop,” he said.

Hope Place is a non-governmental organisation which visits the poor and less fortunate families to contribute some essential food items such as rice, cooking oil, sugar, salt, biscuits and noodles.

It carries out aid deliveries once every two months and currently supports more than 170 families.

Hope Place can be reached via its hotline 013- 5672775 or office at 082- 683378 from 8.30am to 12pm or 2pm to 5pm every Monday to Friday or from 9am to 12pm on Saturdays.
