Teresa Kok chided for staging protest in Seputeh

-

KUALA LUMPUR: Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor lashed out at Seputeh member of Parliament Teresa Kok for staging a protest against plans to initiate the Federal Territories Affordable Housing scheme (Rumawip) in the Seputeh area, here.

Tengku Adnan said the MP does not understand the purpose of implementing the programme which is known as ‘urban renewal’ and that Kok’s action could be politically motivated.

“She ( Teresa) does not like development to take place in her area, maybe she feels the demography of the area would change and fears more Malays would be brought to Seputeh.

“However, she does not understand that we are not doing this for one race but for all races,” he told reporters after opening the Jom Bantu Rakyat programme at the Peoples Housing Scheme (PPR) in Kampung Baru Air Panas, here yesterday.

Tengku Adnan who is also the member of Parliament for Putrajaya said the Rumawip programme was to revive development at old housing areas and to develop areas that have been abandoned by building affordable homes for the people.

Media reports yesterday claimed Teresa Kok and a group of residents carrying banners and placards had staged a protest the sale of a land near the Seputeh Community Hall for development.

A video-clip of the protest was also uploaded on social media which shows two individuals claiming the protest had interrupted a wedding at the community hall.

Meanwhile, in a separate development, Tengku Adnan said the City Hall (DBKL) had allocated RM200 million to maintain and refurbish 281 blocks of PPR houses and Public Housing in and around the city.

“DBKL will monitor houses that are old and need to be refurbished. If such houses are identified, maintenance or repairs will be carried out for free,” he said adding that DBKL would also monitor the night activities at PPR and Public Housing schemes to ensure such units are not misused by the tenants.

“If we find out that units allocated for someone has been rented out to others, they will be given immediate notice to vacate the unit. We do not want such facilities to be misused,” he said. — Bernama
