‘Chinese prefer to be recruited as Immigration officers’

-

SIBU: Response from the Chinese community in applying to join the public service is very encouraging, with the post of Immigration officer most keenly sought after.

This is followed by assistant cu s t oms s uper intendent , administrative and diplomatic officer, immigration superintendent, medical officer, training assistant pharmacist, training assistant medical officer and customs superintendent.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Joseph Entulu disclosed this yesterday when asked about posts most applied by Chinese at Public Services Commission ( PSC) online portal last year.

“There is encouraging response from the Chinese community in wanting to serve in the civil service. Based on the PSC data, Chinese applicants made up 26,661 or 1.71 per cent of the total 1,561,206 applications nationwide made to the Public Services Commission (PSC) portal in 2016,” he said when contacted yesterday.

Entulu oversees PSC besides other two portfolios, namely Administrative Modernisation and Management Planning ( Mampu) and Education Service Commission ( ESC).

The Selangau MP said: “The recruitment policy practised by PSC is entirely based on merit and competency of the candidates, where all applicants are treated fairly irrespective of race, religion and gender. This means everyone has an equal chance of being considered in this open competition.

“Many interviewees misunderstand the concept of meritocracy. For job placement purpose, meritocracy includes not just academic results but also attitude, grooming and sometimes, even family and personal background.”

He added that through the Continuous Recruitment System (eSMSM), Malaysians could apply online by completing the SPA8i form at PSC’s portal anytime and from anyplace in the world.

“With the recruitment policy that is based on merit and candidates’ competency - it provides fair opportunity for all qualified candidates.”

To ensure that the public service continue to be at the highest level, only quality candidates irrespective of race, religion and gender would be recruited to the civil service, he said.

He added that while the job application through PSC was open to all Malaysians, it was up to the individuals to apply to enter the public service based on interests, tendencies and opportunities available.

PSC, according to Entulu, always rolled out job carnival and outreach programmes to explain and encourage qualified and quality candidates irrespective of race to apply for the service civil.

This year, PSC has planned to conduct job carnival and outreach programmes on March 16, ( 9am till 5pm) at MITC Complex in Jalan Konvensyen, Hang Tuah Jaya, Ayer Keroh, Melaka.

“PSC outreach programme for Sarawak was held on March 11 at Rumah Asan and Kampung Medamit in Limbang while in Belaga and Kapit it will be held on April 1,” Entulu said.
