RM24,718 worth of fake Adidas sneakers, Fipper slippers seized

KUCHING: The State Domestic Trade, Co-operatives and Consumeris­m Ministry seized RM24,718 worth of Adidas sneakers and Fipper slippers believed to be counterfei­t goods during a raid in Batu Kawa yesterday.

The eight-member team descended on the premises around noon, after a complaint was received from the trademark holder.

This is the first major case in Sarawak involving 2,236 pairs of Fipper slippers in various sizes and colours which were manufactur­ed in Thailand and worth RM12,298.

The team also seized 270 pairs of counterfei­t Chinamade Adidas sneakers worth RM12,420.

The state ministry’s chief enforcemen­t officer Abd Hafidz A Rahim said they questioned a 41-year- old man who claimed to be the premises owner and took his statement.

“We found that this premises supplies to shops in the whole state. It is a wholesaler whom we believe is around six months into operation.”

Abd Hafidz issued a warning to shops selling fake goods to stop immediatel­y, adding that they were going to embark on a large-scale inspection soon.

“If you’re selling them now, get them off your shelves. You may have already bought your stock, but if you sell them you are committing an offence.”

The fine is not more than RM25,000 for the first offence, and RM50,000 for subsequent offences if the offender is found guilty under Section 8 ( 2) ( B) of the Trade Descriptio­n Act 2011

Under Section 8 of the same Act, a fine of not more than RM15,000 per item that carries the counterfei­t trade descriptio­n will be imposed on the offending party. For individual­s, the fine is not more than RM10,000 per item.
