MIRI: Miri Indian Association ( MIA) celebrated Holi Festival (Festival of Colours) by the beach at Piasau Boat Club on Saturday, in a true spirit of compassion and forgiving.

The celebration, organised by MIA’s women section led by Bharathi Anand and Parveen Kaur, started at 3pm with the throwing of coloured powder and coloured water at each other to wish everyone ‘Happy Holi’.

It was attended by 80 people including expatriates and MIA president Karambir Singh

“The afternoon was an event of colours, fun and frolic. We played in the water with the colours and there was a true spirit of enjoyment and happiness throughout the afternoon,” Karambir shared with The Borneo Post.

Soon after a high tea was served at the boat club, with some traditional Indian food such as Paratta, Pakoras and laddoo and some Malaysian cuisines like Mee Hoon and spring rolls to make the event a truly Malaysian Indian Holi.

“On behalf of MIA I would like to thank everyone who attended the event and made it successful. MIA is honoured to host an event attended by other communities too and would like to wish everyone a Happy Holi which falls on Monday, March 13, 2017,” he said.

Karambir added that Holi Festival has a cultural significance among various cultures of the Indian subcontinent and it is a festive day to end and rid oneself of past errors and to end conflicts by meeting others.

“It is a day to forget and forgive. Holi also marks the start of spring, an occasion for people to enjoy the changing seasons and make new friends,” he said.

Karambir said traditionally on the day of Holi, mothers send their children out on the streets to indulge in all the drenching and smearing of colours.

Many like to wear white sarees or salwar kameez, and the men often wear white pyjamas and kurtas, all of which are traditional Indian costumes.
