Bubuk season means extra income for some

MIRI: Some families here are taking advantage of the krill or bubuk season to increase their income.

Bubuk-seller Lela Mohamad said each season is a great opportunity for her and her siblings to work together as a family.

We always take advantage of this to get together. My brothers will go to sea to get some bubuk and I will help them sell them here. Lela Mohamad, bubuk-seller

“We always take advantage of this to get together. My brothers will go to sea to get some bubuk and I will help them sell them here,” she said at the family’s stall near the Lutong old airport strip yesterday.

She said her family members use a scoop net, known locally as pakak, to catch the krill. Lela explained that the pakak is tied to a sampan and then used to scoop up the bubuk.

“When we go a bit further from the shore, it will be easier to catch the bubuk as they will be floating. Floating bubuk are also cleaner because they are a bit further from the shore and cleaner bubuk are easier to sell,” she said.

Lela added that some bubuk caught nearer to shore would usually be entangled with rubbish and debris, requiring time to clean out, and retailing for less.

The family’s stall is open as early as 7am. Depending on the season, the price of bubuk can range from RM2 to RM8 per kg. The season can last from three weeks to over one month.
