SIBU: Title favourite Mark Yeo had to deep dig before overcoming fast rising star Yong Kung Chai 3-2 (49- 3, 23- 50, 77- 8, 55- 65, 52-19) in a quarter-final of the Sibu Snooker Cueball Closed Championship held at Cueball Centre on Wednesday night.

The f lamboyant Yeo took the first frame with ease before Yong surprisingly grabbed the second frame to equal the score line at 11.

Yeo took the third frame and could have wrapped up the match had he not fumbled the pink ball in the fourth frame.

He was leading at 55- 45 and with only the pink and black balls remaining but in his haste to pot an easy pink, he committed a silly foul when the cue ball ended up in the net.

Yong stepped in and cleared the table to take the frame at 65- 55.

early lead in the deciding frame before Yeo recouped and accurately potted several blue balls to resume his confidence.

“Yong is a tough nut to crack and I must admit he has improved a lot on his potting skills. Hopefully, I can continue to play my game with full focus in the next game,” he added.

Over at the other table, youngster Engkuang Mancha sounded the alarm when he came from behind to edge Sie Leong Ung 3-2 (16- 47, 51-24, 10- 58, 70- 30, 57-28) to ease through to the quarter-finals.

Engkuang has been polishing his potting skills real hard in the past months and it was therefore not surprising that he had managed to qualify for a semi-final berth.

Much remains to be seen if he can dethrone Yeo in the semi-final to be held tonight.
