Man charged with possession of meth pleads not guilty

KUCHING: A man charged with possessing methamphetamine at his house last month, pleaded not guilty in the Magistrate’s Court here yesterday.

Hew Yu Kong is facing two charges under Section 12( 2) of Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, read together with Section 39A(1) of the same Act which upon conviction, provides an imprisonment term of not less than two years but not exceeding five years, and also whipping of not less than three strokes but not more than nine strokes.

The accused was found with the drug when apprehended at a house along Jalan Sultan Tengah here on Feb 8.

Earlier on, Hew faced a drug trafficking charge in High Court, but the case was later discharged not amounting to acquittal.

The charges framed against him were reduced after the chemist’s report on the drugs was submitted to the judge.

The initial charge was framed under Section 39B of the same Act, which carries a mandatory death sentence upon conviction.
