Chan mum on staying on as MBKS mayor

-

ASAJAYA: Dato James Chan is not telling whether he will remain as Kuching City South Council (MBKS) mayor after his current term expires in May this year.

Answering questions from reporters yesterday, he said what is important is that he will continue to do his job during his current term to ensure that areas under MBKS are well taken care of.

“A mayor’s job is to serve the people. I do not want to be mayor if I cannot serve the people well and if MBKS failed to execute its duty as a local authority during my time as a mayor,” he added.

Looking back at the years since he was appointed MBKS mayor, Chan said he is proud of what he has done for the people.

As mayor, he said he had done what was needed to be done for the areas under MBKS, including making crucial changes, making the right move for the community and improving the services of MBKS.

“My secret is really to make myself close to the people as I try my best to listen and better understand the needs of the people in MBKS areas. So far it has worked for me and MBKS has managed to solve almost every problem in our area,” he said.

Chan has been serving as MBKS mayor for four terms since 2008.

He was speaking to reporters during his visit to the Fuk Teck K’ung Temple in Beliong village here with around 200 members of the Kuching South Hawkers and Traders Association.

Kuching South Hawkers and Traders Association chairman Tan Choon Yong said the main objective of the trip was to foster ties between MBKS officials, including the mayor himself, and members of the association.
