LAWAS: It was a grand wedding reception for newlyweds Mohammad Nazmi Aizuddin Awang Tengah and Alyssa Ardynna Aminudine at Hotel Seri Malaysia here on Sunday, attended by more than 4,000 guests from here, Limbang, Brunei and Sabah.

Nazmi – the eldest son of Second Resource Planning and Environment Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan and Datuk Dayang Morliah Awang Daud – arrived in style for the big day, accompanied by a convoy of big bikers.

There was a brief downpour just before the start of the reception, but this was regarded as ‘hujan rahmat’ (rain of blessings).

The groom, flanked by family elders, looked regal in his traditional Brunei Malay pink songket ensemble as he was led to the dais where his bride – looking exquisite in a delicately pink embroidered dress – was waiting.

State Legislative Assembly Speaker Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar, Deputy Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister and also Lawas MP Datuk Henry Sum Agong, Limbang MP Hasbi Habibolah, Assistant Minister for Industrial Development ( Investment and Promotion) Datuk Julaihi Narawi, Assistant Minister for Welfare and Community Wellbeing and Bukit Kota assemblyman Dr Abdul Rahman Ismail, Lambir assemblyman Ripin Lamat, and Batu Danau assemblyman Paulus Palu Gumbang.

Dignitaries from Brunei such as Brunei Consul-General in Sarawak Kamsani Noordin and his wife Pengiran Kartini Pengiran Md Tahir also attended the event here, which came after the reception in Kuching the weekend before where the VVIP guests included Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud and his wife Toh Puan Dato Patinggi Raghad Kurdi Taib, as well as Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg and his wife Datin Amar Datuk Juma’ani Tuanku Bujang.

Nazmi and Alyssa, both 30, met during their studying days at Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus in Kuching.

The bride is the second of Aminudine Sarbini and Sabtuyah Ibrahim’s four children.

Awang Tengah, in his welcoming speech, warmly welcomed Alyssa into his family.

“All my five children are boys – the only ‘girl’ in the family was Datuk Dayang Morliah. So, we welcome Alyssa as ‘another girl’ into the family,” he quipped.

The guests were entertained by a medley performance by renowned artiste Jay Jay – former frontman of the band Carefree, popular in the 70s and 80s – that night.
