Yoyo players show off skills in contest

KUCHING: The Sarawak Regional Yoyo Contest ( SRYC) attracted 25 yoyo players who had the chance to show- off their skill and passion in a one- day competitio­n held at Kuching Sentral last Sunday.

The event, organised by Sport Club Yo-Blitz Kuching, aimed at bringing back the old school toy known as the yoyo.

The players came from near and far including Kota Padawan, Samarahan, Kuching, Bau and Terengganu.

“Since the past decade, this toy has been forgotten and now Sport Club Yo-Blitz Kuching is bringing back this skill toy again, to encourage the youth in Sarawak to come out and engage on this healthy sport and to nurture the talent and passion of yo-yo,” said club founder Ryan Han.

Players competed in five categories: 1A Division, X Division, Junior Division, Open Division and the Long Sleeper Division.

They were judged based on cleanlines­s, variation, rareness, execution, music use, body control, space use and showmanshi­p by profession­al yoyo players including Jojo Sim, Wesley Lim You Yang, Ridzwan Ngataman and Stanley Low Jia Cheng from Terengganu.

Lim You Kang from Terengganu emerged as champion, while fi rst and second runner-ups in the Junior Division category were Joshua Hii Ci En ( Kuching) and Raden Muhammad Harith ( Kuching) respective­ly.

In the X Division category, Lim was the champion while Adi Hisham Mohtar was second and Asnu Minzian Ilman was third.

For the Long Sleeper Division category, Stanley Low from Terengganu was named the winner, while Jacob Chan and Phiong Tung Lian finished second and third.

Kuchingite Ivan Sim added another achievemen­t to his resume after his recent win at The Giant Yoyo Contest 2017 held here last month when he emerged as the champion of the 1A Division.

Phiong and Ahmad Syahrul Marzuki were first and second runners-up respective­ly in the same category.

Meanwhile, the Open Division category witnessed Joel Cham Hong Xin, Sim and Phiong emerge as champion, first and second runners-up respective­ly.

All winners received yoyos, yoyo accessorie­s, medals, certificat­es of participat­ion and other sponsored prizes.

Meanwhile, the Elite Sport Club Yo-Blitz team members — Sim, Adi, Phion, Lim, Isaac Bong, Curtis Yeo and Han — were also introduced at the event. They will be representi­ng Sarawak in the Malaysia Yoyo Championsh­ip 2017 to be held in Terengganu from April 29 to 30.

“We hope bring the championsh­ip title from Terengganu back to Sarawak and make the state proud,” added Han.

SRYC 2017 was supported by Kuching Sentral, Rupert Rage, ANC Burger, YoYo Ranger, Kedai Yoyo, Yoyoskeel, Long House Clothing, Singwon Yoyo, Rakan Bestnye Sarawak and Malaysia YoYo Associatio­n.

There was also a featured special appearance by The Pharmacist DJ.
