Selvaraj re-elected Miri Hindu Society chairman for 2017-2018
MIRI: Selvaraj Grapragasem will lead the new office bearers of Miri Hindu Society for the term of 2017-2018.
He was re-elected chairman during the society’s annual general meeting (AGM) at Sri Kamini Durga Eswari Amman Temple, Taman Tunku here recently.
He will be assisted by Dr. Anbalagan Krishnan (deputy chairman), Shubashini Krishnan (secretary), Selvi Anbalagan (treasurer) and Dr Dhanuskodi Rengasamy (assistant treasurer).
The committee members are Gopi Krishnan, Kanekhendran Sunderam, Sivaram Manickam, Sharmila Devi, Rakini Rada, Radha Rethinam Perumal Pillai, Insp. Wikram Sanda and Murali Krishnan while Capt. Dillesh Chander was appointed internal auditor for the society. During the AGM, Selvaraj thanked all parties including Assistant Minister for Tourism Datuk Lee Kim Shin and the state government for being very supportive in building the first Hindu temple here situated at Taman Tunku, Miri.
Prayers commence daily in the morning (6.30am-10am) and in the evening (5.30pm9pm) and usually there will be around 100 devotees attending Friday poojas every week. Selvaraj added that this year, the society intends to conduct more social and cultural activities to foster togetherness among the Indian community.
“This includes family day, a Deepavali fair, Mother’s Day, Indian cultural night, visit to the orphanage and old folk’s home and also Navarathiri celebration,” he explained.
Selvaraj hopes that the local Indian community, especially the Hindus will support Miri Hindu Society and participate in all activities carried out as it will be a channel to mingle around and understand each other better.
